The farmers prayed, giving sacrifices and burning incense to Heaven for deliverance. The Jade Emperor heard their prayers and saw the destruction caused by his sons. He sent Hou Yi, his bravest god, down to earth to solve the problem of the ten suns and end the catastrophe. Hou Yi was a good, courageous god with a beautiful wife, Chang Er. Deeply in love with each other, they were known as the Divine Couple. Chang Er didn like the thought of going down to earth, but she was unwilling to be separated from her husband, so together they descended to earth and became mortals among the Eastern clans.
Hou Yi was a great archer and brought his magic bow from heaven with him. Knowing that Hou Yi came from heaven, the people of the clans proclaimed him to be their leader.
Seeing how much suffering and destruction were caused by the heat of the ten suns, Hou Yi climbed to the top of Tienshan mountain and began negotiating with the suns to have pity on the unfortunate people. He pleaded to the suns to take turns and make their journeys across the sky singly, one for each day, and explained the white blaze of ten suns is much too much for the land to bear. He also told them how much Heaven loves all living things.
But the ten audacious suns considered it dull and boring to go across the sky one at a time and that much more fun was to be had by coming out together, so they refused to listen. They increased their heat and caused even more suffering. This angered Hou Yi. He took out his magic bow and arrows and shot down nine of the suns; the last sun begged for his life and promised obedience at performing his task of separating night from day.

Finally the earth was at peace and people enjoyed their work and lives. However, when Hou Yi made his report to the Jade Emperor, he was furious at Hou Yi for killing his nine sons, and refused to let the Divine Couple return to Heaven.
As leader of the clans, there was much for Hou Yi to do on earth. He taught the people many ways to defend their land and themselves. He was so busy with his duties he became neglectful of his lovely and lonely wife. Chang Er was especially unhappy to be an earthly mortal with all of mortalitys suffering, aging and death in particular. Also, she was angry at Hou Yi for shooting down the Jade Emperors nine sons, and the couple became unhappy and estranged.
To avoid arguing with his wife, Hou Yi spent his time travelling about the land alone. He became familiar to its people, performing many good deeds wherever he travelled. He also killed a gigantic, 100,000-foot snake and a nine-headed monster that had caused much distress and thousands of lives. Many times he prayed to the Jade Emperor to let himself and his wife return to Heaven, but the Emperor refused his plead and so Hou Yi and Chang Er remained as mortals, suffering as ordinary human beings do.

As with many legends, there are differing and often contradictory accounts。

One tells that Change was a heavenly girl who worked among fairies and immortals in the palace of the Jade Emperor. One day, she broke a special porcelain jar and was banished to live among humans on earth, with the promise that she could return if she performed valuable deeds there。

There was a powerful hero named Hou Yi who was determined to relieve the suffering of the people.
于是他登上昆仑山顶，运足气力，拉满神弓，一口气射下九个太阳。
So he went up to the top of Kunlun, filled his bow with strength, and shot down nine suns in one breath.
他对天上最后一个太阳说:"从今以后，你每天必须按时升起，按时落下，为民造福!"
He said to the last sun in the sky: "From now on, you must rise on time and fall on time for the benefit of the people! "

The matter was discovered by Feng Meng. He was bent on getting Houyis elixir.
八月十五这天清晨，后羿带弟子出门了，逢蒙假装生病留了下来。
On the morning of August 15, Hou Yi took his disciples out and pretended to be ill.
到了晚上逢蒙手提宝剑闯进后羿家里，威逼嫦娥把仙药交出来。
In the evening, Meng Mengs hand-held sword broke into Houyis house and forced Chang E to hand over the elixir.
嫦娥心里想：让这样的人吃了长生不老药，不是要害更多的人吗?

Houyi, a young man who was good at archery was sympathetic with people’s torture so he decided to save them. He took out his bow, ascended up to the peak of the Kunlun Mountain and shot down nine of the ten suns one by one, and he might have shot the last one if it was not called off by others. Thus the severe drought was gone.
这件事惊动了一个名叫后羿的英雄，他登上昆仑山顶，运足神力，拉开神弓，一气射下九个多余的太阳。
Houyi thus was respected and honored by people as a hero. Young men who were fond of archery flocked to him to learn shooting.
后羿立下盖世神功，受到百姓，的尊敬和爱戴，不少志士慕名前来投师学艺。
Houyi later married a pretty lady called Chang’er and lived a happy life with her.

One day on his way to a friend’ home in the Kunlun Mountain, Houyi came across the Heavenly Empress. Houyi was enamored of the happy life with his wife and wanted to be with her forever so he asked the Heavely Empress to give him some elixir. The elixir was strictly controlled off normal people. The Heavely Empress, however, moved by Houyi’s contribution and affection to love and gave him one. The drug was said very powerful and people who took it can fly to the heaven and became a immortal immediately. However, the content was only enough for one person and Houyi was reluctant to leave his beloved wife alone on the earth so he gave the elixir to Chang’er to preserve and wanted to seek another one for his wife. Chang’er carefully stored it in a wooden box while her action was peeked by the evil Fengmeng-one of his husband’s adherents.
一天，后羿到昆仑山访友求道，巧遇由此经过的王母娘娘，后羿因与嫦娥恩爱，想与她永远在一起，便向王母求一包不死药。但因此要凡间控制得严，王母被后羿的贡献和精神打动，就给了他医保，但是神药只够一个人吃据说，服下此药，能即刻升天成仙。然而药只够一个人吃，后羿舍不得撇下妻子，只好暂时把不死药交给嫦娥珍藏。嫦娥将药藏进梳妆台的百宝匣里，不料被蓬蒙看到了。
Three days afterward, Houyi lead his disciples to go out for hunting but Fengmeng who wanted to steal the elixir while Houyi was way, stayed at home deliberately.
三天后，后羿率众徒外出狩猎，心怀鬼胎的蓬蒙假装生病，留了下来。
No sooner as Houyi left his house, Fengmeng knocked into the courtyard where Chang’er was working. He wielded his glitter sword and threatened Chang’er to give him the elixir.
待后羿率众人走后不久，蓬蒙手持宝剑闯入内宅后院，威逼嫦娥交出不死药。
Chang’e had no better idea than swallowed the elixir herself.
嫦娥知道自己不是蓬蒙的对手，只得拿出不死药一口吞了下去。
As soon as she took it, chang’er flew from her house toward the heave and finally landed on the moon.
嫦娥吞下药，身子立时飘离地面、冲出窗口，向天上飞去。
Houyi was told what was happening in the evening when he returned home from bumper hunting. He was astonished, anguished and then very anger so he decided to kill the evil man. But Fengmeng had fled away. Chang’er was transferred to the moon and has lived there since ever.
傍晚，后羿回到家，侍女们哭诉了白天发生的事。后羿既惊又怒，抽剑去杀恶徒，蓬蒙早逃走了。嫦娥从此就在月亮上住了下来。
Change decides to live on the moon because it is nearest to the earth. There she lives a simple and contented life. Even though she is in Heaven, her heart remains in the world of mortals. Never does she forget the deep love she has for Hou Yi.
