Socialcustoms differ from country to country. Does a man walk on the left or theright of a woman in your country? Or doesn't it matter? What about tablemanners? Should you use both hands when you are eating? Should you leave one inyour lap, or on the table?

TheAmericans and the British not only speak the same language but also share alarge number of social customs. For example, in both America and England peopleshake hands when they meet each other for the first time. Also, most Englishmenwill open a door for a woman or offer their seat to a woman, and so will mostAmericans. Promptness is important both in England and in America. That is, ifa dinner invitation is for 7 o'clock, the dinner guest either arrives close tothat time or calls up to explain his delay.

Theimportant thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything thatmight make other people feel uncomfortable - especially if they are your guests. There isan old story about a man who gave a formal dinner party. When the food wasserved, one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife. The otherguests were amused or shocked, but the host calmly picked up his knife andbegan eating in the same way. It would have been bad manners to make his guestfeel foolish or uncomfortable.

Shynessis the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people areanxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with theirown appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring intheir minds: what kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do Isound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?

It isobvious that such uncomfortable feelings must negatively affect people. Aperson's conception of himself or herself is reflected in the way he or shebehaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions. Ingeneral, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areasof their lives.

Shypeople, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influencedby others. They need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing.” Shypeople are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their feelings ofinferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliment with astatement like this one, “You're just saying that to make me feel good. I knowit's not true.” It is clear that while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.

Canshyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people canovercome shyness with determined and patient efforts in buildingself-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with a lack of self-esteem, itis important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths.
