经济数学方法在经济研究和计划工作中运用数学方法和电子计算机的简称。它用现代数学方法来研究经济问题的数量方面,以经济模型的建立和电子计算技术的运用为特征,包括研究各种复杂的经济数量关系时所应用的一系列数学分析和计算方法。就研究的经济数量关系来说，经济数学方法主要内容有：社会再生产的数学分析、部门间产品联系和能力平衡的数学分析、价格形成的数学分析、人口计算和劳动资源的数学分析、需求构成变化的数学分析、消费模型和收入模型的研究、运输问题和生产任务的数学规划等等。就运用的数学分析的方法来说，经济数学方法的主要内容有：经济过程模型法、部门间生产联系分析法、最优化方法（包括线性规划和动态规划）、数理统计中的相关分析法和回归分析法等等。从上述两方面内容看，经济数学方法与数量经济学的含义是相同的。70年代后期,由于社会主义国家普遍重视了经济管理的现代化,经济数学方法在实际经济工作中的应用，从计划工作扩大到整个经济管理领域。50年代末60年代初，在苏联和东欧各国的现代经济数学研究的影响下，中国兴起了经济数学方法的研究。1979年中国学者正式用数量经济学的名称来代替经济数学方法，同时保留经济数学方法这个术语，作为经济数学分析方法或经济数量分析方法的总称。在中国经常使用的经济数学方法，最主要的有：经济计量方法（见经济计量分析）、投入产出法（见投入产出分析）、最优规划法（见最优分析）等。经济数学方法主要表现为经济数学模型方法。特定的经济数学方法总是与特定的经济数学模型联系在一起。但是,也有一些经济数量分析方法,如费用效益分析，并不采用复杂的经济数学模型，这种方法具有直接的或间接的经验判断、得失比较的性质，含有一部分因素较难数量化的特征。经济数学方法并不仅仅是在经济领域应用的数学方法，而是经济内容与数学方法的结合。它已失去纯粹数学的一般性质，但保留数学方法的简洁、精确、有逻辑性、可运算等特点，同时具有经济特色，成了专门研究经济数量关系的数学分析方法。例如，投入产出法，是用向量、矩阵组成的线性代数方法来分析国民经济各部门的生产技术联系的，但它已不是纯粹的线性代数，而是与经济理论、统计资料相结合的一种经济数量分析方法。在经济数学方法的推广应用过程中，改进和完善现在国内外所用的经济数学方法，是经济数学方法得以发展的一条重要途径。另一方面，中国社会主义的经济计划和管理工作对经济数量关系的研究提出了许多新课题，针对这些课题的要求，到经济学中寻找正确的理论，到数学中寻找有效的方法，在两者结合的基础上，制订和研究新的经济数学方法，在解决实际经济问题的过程中加以检验和改进，这是发展经济数学方法的又一重要途径。
