天山一号冰川后峡继续往南行即达乌鲁木齐河的河源区，这里离市中心120余公里，海拔 3740-4480米，雪线平均高度为4055米，这里有1-5号五条现代冰川，最大的是天格尔峰北坡的的一号冰川，它是世界上离大都市最近的冰川。1959年，中国科学院兰州冰川冻土研究所在此建立了天山冰川研究站，这是我国唯一的在国际上开放交流的高山冰川研究站。一号冰川长2.4公里，平均宽度500米，面积1.85平方公里，最大厚度140米，年均运动速度约5米，底部海拔高度为3740米。冰川内部晶莹蔚蓝，冰面裂隙纵横，金字塔般的角峰，锯齿形的刀脊，弧形的冰川和喧腾的冰川河独具魅力，令人震撼。在一号冰川下面海拔3500米以上，可以看到成层的槽谷、岩坎、岩盆、冰斗及状似绵羊脊背的羊背石等冰蚀景观，在海拔2800米以上的谷地保存着各时期的冰川堆积物。川上没有树，也没有草，据说终年积雪。一号冰川，据说是因为被发现研究的较早，因而被命名为 一号冰川。实际上，在它的周围，还散布着二号，三号，六号等数座冰川。由这些冰川流出的冰川水，汇集成乌鲁木齐河，流到山外，养育了一百六十多万乌鲁木齐人。在一号冰川的顶部，有一座海拔4350米的雪峰，由于它紧 临沟通南北疆的天山公路，又是附近最高的一座山峰，因而被认为是分隔南北疆的标志性雪峰，人们称它为胜利大板。冰川小知识冰川冰是由降落到地面的雪转变而来的。雪的晶体逐步圆化变为粒雪，使积雪的密度 逐渐增加。这一过程在温度接近融点和存在液态水时进行得最快。其后，占优势的重 结晶作用的平均粒径增大。当集合体的密度达到约 0.84克/立方厘米时，颗粒之间便 没有空隙，而变得不可渗透。这标志着从粒雪到冰川冰的转化。
