天山一号冰川后峡继续往南行即达乌鲁木齐河的河源区,这里离市中心120余公里,海拔 3740-4480米,雪线平均高度为4055米,这里有1-5号五条现代冰川,最大的是天格尔峰北坡的的一号冰川,它是世界上离大都市最近的冰川。1959年,中国科学院兰州冰川冻土研究所在此建立了天山冰川研究站,这是我国唯一的在国际上开放交流的高山冰川研究站。一号冰川长2.4公里,平均宽度500米,面积1.85平方公里,最大厚度140米,年均运动速度约5米,底部海拔高度为3740米。冰川内部晶莹蔚蓝,冰面裂隙纵横,金字塔般的角峰,锯齿形的刀脊,弧形的冰川和喧腾的冰川河独具魅力,令人震撼。在一号冰川下面海拔3500米以上,可以看到成层的槽谷、岩坎、岩盆、冰斗及状似绵羊脊背的羊背石等冰蚀景观,在海拔2800米以上的谷地保存着各时期的冰川堆积物。川上没有树,也没有草,据说终年积雪。一号冰川,据说是因为被发现研究的较早,因而被命名为 一号冰川。实际上,在它的周围,还散布着二号,三号,六号等数座冰川。由这些冰川流出的冰川水,汇集成乌鲁木齐河,流到山外,养育了一百六十多万乌鲁木齐人。在一号冰川的顶部,有一座海拔4350米的雪峰,由于它紧 临沟通南北疆的天山公路,又是附近最高的一座山峰,因而被认为是分隔南北疆的标志性雪峰,人们称它为胜利大板。冰川小知识冰川冰是由降落到地面的雪转变而来的。雪的晶体逐步圆化变为粒雪,使积雪的密度 逐渐增加。这一过程在温度接近融点和存在液态水时进行得最快。其后,占优势的重 结晶作用的平均粒径增大。当集合体的密度达到约 0.84克/立方厘米时,颗粒之间便 没有空隙,而变得不可渗透。这标志着从粒雪到冰川冰的转化。
