石油勘探开发科学研究院中国石油及天然气勘探、开发和钻井、采油工艺装备的综合性研究机构，是石油及天然气勘探、开发的科学研究中心。该院前身是1956年建立的北京石油地质研究所，1958年该所同石油炼制研究所合并，成立石油工业部石油科学研究院，1960年石油地质研究所分别迁往大庆油田和胜利油田。1964年在北京重建石油地质综合研究所。1969年该所全部迁往湖北潜江。1972年在北京组建了燃料化学工业部石油勘探开发规划研究院。1978年在该院基础上成立了石油化学工业部石油勘探开发科学研究院，1980年更名为石油工业部石油勘探开发科学研究院。该院设石油地质、遥感地质、油气田开发、石油钻井、石油机械等5个研究所（共30个研究室）,三个院属研究室──石油情报研究室、石油发展史研究室、实验室，一个计算站，一个实验工厂，一个研究生部。可进行石油勘探开发及钻井采油工艺装备的各种试验、试制和材料、装备的性能检测、鉴定。对中国东部及沿海大陆架油气资源评价，全国各类油气田产量和最终采收率预测、遥感技术在石油地质方面的应用、热力采油、新型钻井泥浆、定向钻井技术、螺杆机械及有机地球化学、煤成气、渗流力学理论等方面都取得了较好的研究成果。该院编著出版的科技书籍有30多种，其中《渤海湾盆地下第三系化石图册》获得了国家自然科学三等奖，《世界含油气盆地图册》和《中国陆相油气生成》获得了石油工业部一等科研奖。
