机构学广义地说是指关于机构的一切科学知识的总和，狭义地说是指机械原理的一部分。机构学是在18世纪末随着机器的出现而兴起的。机构是由若干机件用几何约束连接而成的运动链，各机件间的相对运动受制于这些约束。机构是几何可变系统。单纯的机构只能传递运动、力或能，而进行有效功能转化的机构则称为机器，包括发动机、工具机和工作机。机械是机构和机器的总称。机械原理的研究内容包括：① 机构的构造和分类；②机构运动学；③机构动力学。后两部分完全以理论力学为基础。机构学一般包括①、②两部分。第③部分涉及机械在运动中的惯性力及其平衡，机械中的摩擦、润滑和磨损，以及效率等问题。就目的来说，机械原理和机构学的内容又可分为分析现有机械或机构和综合新机械两部分，以便在研究中设计出效率更高、能把人的重复性劳动减至最小甚至能代替人劳动的自动机或机器人。
